Petra Costigan-Oorthuijs – Beneath the surface, beyond the obvious.
Drawing on more than two decades as a Lecturer, Trainer and Coach, Petra engages with energy, compassion and humour, whilst challenging old assumptions in a positive and sensitive way. She listens intently to what is said – but also to what is left unsaid – believing stories without words can be just as revealing.
Petra once studied Nursing Management and was also a Drama Teacher in The Netherlands, where she used Theatre to teach personal development to third level students.
Both professions, Nursing and Theatre, demand an ability to look perceptively at people, to win their trust and to see beneath the surface, behind the facade.
While working with Mother Teresa in Calcutta, Petra met a distressed woman in need of comfort and connection. The two had no shared language but eventually managed to establish a rapport. Petra often thinks of this as a eureka moment: an encounter which illuminated the real power of non-verbal communication.
Perhaps it was this insight that prompted her to pair the empathy and compassion of medical work with the transformative power of Theatre. The result was to become her life’s work: toBE.
In teams, or in tandem, Petra builds trust – then teaches people not only to know what is needed, but ultimately to actually be what is needed.
So, why let fear hold you back? Make that leap, and push through, safe in the knowledge that you’re in expert hands.
